Join AIA Milwaukee and WiscoNOMA for a tour of the Milwaukee Public Library Martin Luther King Branch!

Completed in September 2025, the MLK Branch showcases the opportunities associated with modern mixed-use "library-apartment" developments. The tour will examine how the design navigates the structural and acoustic challenges of supporting multi-family residential units above a high-traffic civic space. Attendees will also observe the project's approach to the King Drive streetscape where massing and transparency bridge the gap between historic context and contemporary urban density. As part of an $11 million civic investment, this community hub provides a tangible case study in balancing municipal budgets to achieve neighborhood revitalization goals.

Learning Objectives:

• Participants will analyze the spatial layout and specialized programming areas to understand how inclusive design principles ensure the facility is accessible and safe for a diverse, intergenerational population.
• Attendees will assess how the building’s massing, transparency, and entrance placement contribute to pedestrian safety and the revitalization of the historic King Drive corridor.
• The tour will identify specific high-performance materials and daylighting strategies used to enhance occupant comfort, reduce energy consumption, and meet municipal sustainability mandates.
• Participants will evaluate the structural and mechanical coordination required to successfully integrate a high-occupancy public library with a multi-story residential complex within a single building envelope.
