Join AIA Milwaukee for a Tour of Lapham Lodge

Lapham Lodge, a 5,000-square-foot trailhead and gathering space in the Kettle Moraine State Forest, opened in May 2025 to replace the undersized Evergreen Shelter. Designed by Galbraith Carnahan Architects, it anchors the park’s expanding year-round activities, with special emphasis on cross-country skiing on man-made snow—a rare feature in Wisconsin’s state park system. The lodge includes a large gathering hall with fireplace, multipurpose space, restrooms, changing areas, lockers, and a covered patio overlooking the trails. Funded by a $1.3M federal grant and matching community donations led by the Friends of Lapham Peak, the project embodies a strong partnership between designers, park staff, and local advocates.

The tour will begin promptly at 4:00PM. Tour followed by a s'more bonfire social with beverages generously sponsored by Galbraith Carnahan Architects.

Learning Objectives:

• Site: Evaluate how the lodge’s placement within Lapham Peak State Forest responds to topography, viewsheds, trail connections, and seasonal use patterns, ensuring accessibility for visitors in all weather conditions.
• Programming: Analyze how the program mix—including large gathering spaces, flexible multipurpose rooms, support facilities, and outdoor areas—was developed to serve diverse user groups ranging from competitive skiers to casual hikers.
• Systems: Understand the building systems (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) selected for year-round comfort, energy efficiency, and durability in a heavily used public facility within a cold-climate environment.
• Code: Identify key code compliance strategies, including accessibility requirements, occupant load calculations, egress planning, and fire protection measures appropriate to a public lodge in a state park setting.
