This presentation explores the origins and evolution of the Wisconsin State Reformatory, established in 1897 during a shift from punitive imprisonment to progressive rehabilitation. Inspired by Elmira, New York, but embraced most fully by Wisconsin, the reformatory balanced reform ideals with traditional prison structures. For over 50 years, it remained committed to its mission, adapting to change while preserving its historical and architectural foundations. Join AIA WI and Green Bay Correctional Institution (GBCI) to learn the history and receive a tour of this monumental building that is on the National Register of Historic Places. To adapt to the 21st Century, GBCI has made many significant upgrades while still preserving its historic value.
