Madison & Milwaukee Lobbying Ordinances

The Madison City Attorney has sent letters to 340 individuals, including a number of architects from across the state, requesting them to register in compliance with the City of Madison 's lobbying ordinance or provide information demonstrating why they are exempt. AIA Southwest Wisconsin leaders met today to discuss proposed amendments to the lobbying ordinance and how best to clarify the current ordinance's exemption for the "practice of architecture" as defined in state statutes. The new City of Milwaukee lobbying ordinance goes into effect on July 1. The Milwaukee Ordinance does not include language exempting architects. For information, please go to Architects representing clients in discussions with city officials and department heads and in appearances before city committees and commissions need to understand these two different lobbying ordinances and advise your clients accordingly. Last Word

"The bottom line: Good buildings are not happy accidents. They are the result of painstaking collaboration. And, because the rest of us will have to live for a long time with the results, architects and their clients always need to ask themselves the ultimate question: If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, is this really the building you would like to be remembered for?" [Whitney Gould, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, June 6, 2005 ] (6/10/2005)
