Gantt Lecture

North Carolina architect and community leader Harvey Gantt, FAIA, is presenting a public lecture from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, in Engelmann Hall on the UW-Milwaukee campus. A reception will follow his lecture, which will address the important role of architects in shaping the urban environment. Gantt is a founding principal of Gantt Huberman Architects and a former Mayor of Charlotte. He also took on Jesse Helms in two campaigns for the U.S. Senate and chaired the National Capital Planning Commission. Gantt is a strong advocate for livable, secure and sustainable communities. Licensing Roundtable

The AIA Wisconsin Board of Directors held its April meeting last week at the UWM School of Architecture & Urban Planning. Over the lunch hour, AIA Wisconsin President Colin Klos, AIA, La Crosse, moderated a lively and informative roundtable panel discussion on licensing issues that addressed the path from school, through internship to the Architect Registration Exam (ARE). Panelists included: Louis Wasserman, AIA, Shorewood; Russ LaFrombois, AIA, Whitefish Bay ; Robert Greenstreet, Int'l Assoc. AIA, Milwaukee ; Dan Sisel, AIA, Milwaukee; and Jim Otto, AIA, Hubertus. The roundtable started an important dialogue on how best to inform students and interns about the process for becoming licensed as an architect and to encourage these individuals to pursue this career path.

Emerging Professionals Workshop

The free "Emerging Professionals Workshop" scheduled for 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, in conjunction with the 2006 AIA Wisconsin Convention & Expo at Monona Terrace will continue the dialogue on licensing and the future of the profession. State IDP Coordinator LaFrombois will review the national AIA intern-friendly firm initiative. AIA150 Wisconsin

AIA Southeast Wisconsin and AIA Southwest Wisconsin leaders have submitted grant requests for two exciting AIA150 "Blueprint for America" initiatives. These AIA grants are intended to support component efforts to collaborate on initiatives that address a community's needs and produce a shared vision for a more livable future. John Holz, AIA, AIA Southeast Wisconsin Vice President, requested support for an initiative to provide affordable, sustainable and accessible modular infill housing for neighborhoods in Milwaukee , Racine and Waukesha. The housing will be designed as part of a graduate studio project at UWM SARUP. In the Madison area, AIA Southwest Wisconsin Vice President Kelly Thompson-Frater, AIA, requested a grant to document the design charrette process that will be used to develop a vision for improving the Allied Drive area. Southwest Chapter members are working with City of Madison officials and meeting with neighborhood stakeholders Thursday evenings to prepare for the charrette in July.

Regional Associate Director

If you are an Associate AIA member interested in serving as the Regional Associate Director (RAD) on the AIA National Associates Committee (NAC), please contact AIA Wisconsin for information about the roles and responsibilities of this position and the appointment process. The RAD for the North Central Region represents Associate AIA members in Wisconsin , Minnesota , South Dakota and North Dakota. The appointment is for a two-year term, starting in October. RAD candidates will be asked to submit a letter of interest with a resume to the AIA Wisconsin Board of Director by 6/5/06 .

Green State Buildings

Governor Doyle has signed an executive order for the creation of high performance green building standards and energy conservation for state facilities. The order, signed earlier this week, is part of the Governor's "Conserve Wisconsin" agenda. Over the past several months, AIA Wisconsin members and other design and construction industry professionals have been reviewing and offering input on draft sustainable design guidelines being developed by the Division of State Facilities for the design, construction and operation of state and university buildings.

Sustainability | Energy Efficiency Award

The Call for Entries for the 2006 Wisconsin Sustainability | Energy Efficiency (SE ² ) Leadership Award program is now available. AIA Wisconsin is partnering with other organizations to coordinate this award that recognizes leadership in energy efficient and sustainable design, construction and operation of Wisconsin commercial and larger multifamily buildings and related systems. The deadline for applications is 7/7/06 , with entry materials due by 8/18/06. For further information, contact AIA Wisconsin or visit the Wisconsin Green Building Alliance website at .

Certificate of Authorization

Section 443.08(5) of the Wisconsin Statutes states that no firm, partnership or corporation may engage in the practice of or offer to practice architecture or use in connection with its name or otherwise assume, use or advertise any title or description tending to convey the impression that it is engaged in the practice of architecture unless it has been issued a certificate of authorization from the Wisconsin Department of Regulation & Licensing. This section also states that no firm, partnership or corporation may advertise or offer to furnish architectural services unless it has been issued a certificate of authorization. This certificate requires the firm, partnership or corporation to have a registered architect in its employment.
