Project Description

This project was recognized for its place in the landscape. Situated on 185 acres along the shores of Lake Michigan, the 39,000 square foot “green” facility is one of the most environmentally sensitive buildings in the nation.

The architects were commissioned to design a building that preserves the natural sanctuary of the site and educates the public about sustainability and the natural world. A primary design challenge was to integrate sustainable design principles into a highly functional and aesthetically pleasing building.

The building’s energy-efficient design helps create an “energy flywheel” to stay cool in summer and warm in winter. A geothermal heat pump provides supplemental heating and cooling.

The building, with its expansive outdoor porches, creates a welcoming place for visitors to gather and view the woods and the lake beyond.

Jury Comments

This project is recognized for its place in the landscape.

The project shows some nice overall massing and references to rural structures, which was immediately attractive. We also felt that the goals of green building technologies were well documented in this application. It was able to carry out the goals in a complete way, including solar, wind, heating, cooling and daylighting. It wasn’t inventive, but it is complete and worthy of recognition. The Nature Center will obviously become a well-loved and well-used building. It is an appropriate building for the site. It’s a “site-ation” for its place in the landscape.
