Mandatory Continuing Education Now Part of Wisconsin Architect License Renewal

Long-Range Planning Retreat
For over 20 years, AIA leaders in Wisconsin have gathered in an old log lodge on Mirror Lake to participate in a long-range planning session. This year, 30 members participated in the two-day retreat chaired by AIA Wisconsin Vice President/President-Elect Thomas Hirsch, AIA, Madison. Participants included students to seasoned AIA members and everything in between. Topics at the retreat focused on the AIA 2010-2015 Strategic Plan, results of the Membership Satisfaction Survey, celebration of our 100th anniversary in 2011,
status reports on the three initiatives established at last year’s planning retreat – supporting members in economic crisis, promoting the profession and community service.

2010 AIA Wisconsin Leadership Team
At its meeting in August, the AIA Wisconsin Board of Directors approved the appointment of Henry Kosarzycki, AIA, Greendale, as 2011 Vice President/President-Elect and David Peterson, AIA, Eau Claire, as 2011 Secretary/Treasurer. Kosarzycki and Peterson will join 2011 President Thomas Hirsch, AIA, Madison, and immediate Past President Jim Otto, AIA, Hubertus, on the 2011 Executive Committee for AIA Wisconsin.

Local Chapter Leaders
Help develop local AIA Chapter programs. It is a good time to contact Chapter officers to discuss volunteer opportunities. To find out more, please contact the AIA Wisconsin office . . . or the President of your local AIA Chapter: AIA Milwaukee – Randy Morrison, AIA, (414) 272-2000; Southwest – Rob Wheat, AIA, (608) 325-3872; Northeast – Jody Andres, AIA, (920) 380-2800; and Northwest – Mark Piquette, AIA, (715) 841-1955.

Director-At-Large Candidates
If you are interested in helping to shape AIA Wisconsin policies and programs, please consider tossing your hat in the ring as a candidate for Director-At-Large. Two
Directors-At-Large will be elected by the membership this fall to a two-year term beginning January 2011. There also are many valuable leadership opportunities with your local AIA Chapter. For further information, contact the AIA Wisconsin office.

Associate Representative

The AIA Wisconsin Board of Directors may appoint two Associate AIA members to a two-year term as an Associate Representative. The terms are staggered, so one Associate Representative is appointed by the Board of Directors each year. Associate AIA members interested in reviewing and shaping AIA Wisconsin policies and programs for the benefit of fellow members are encouraged to submit a letter of interest and a brief resume to: Thomas Hirsch, AIA, Vice President, AIA Wisconsin, 321 S. Hamilton St., Madison, WI 53703. For a description of the Associate Representative position, please contact the AIA Wisconsin office.

Kudos to Emerging Professionals

The good work of AIA Wisconsin Emerging Professionals was recognized in a recent article featured in the national AIA eNewsletter AIArchitect. http://www.aia.org/practicing/AIAB085552  Visit the AIA Wisconsin Emerging Professionals page to find out more about events, programs and mentoring opportunities.

Golden Award
The deadline for 2011 AIA Wisconsin Golden Award nominations is November 2. The Golden Award is the highest honor that AIA Wisconsin can bestow upon a member architect. It recognizes distinguished leadership and service to the profession and the AIA. Twenty-three AIA Wisconsin members have been recognized since 1986, with Brian F. Larson, AIA, Eau Claire, selected to receive this year's Golden Award. Contact AIA Wisconsin to request nomination materials.

2011 Membership Dues
At its meeting earlier this month, the AIA Wisconsin Board of Directors approved keeping state dues for 2011 the same as for this year: AIA Architect – Firm Principal $300, AIA Architect – Employee $215, Associate AIA $80 ($60 for first three years of membership), Professional Affiliate $300, and Student Affiliate $15. AIA Emeritus members have no state dues responsibility. The four local AIA Chapters in Wisconsin do not have membership dues. National AIA dues for 2011 will remain the same as this year. AIA Architect - $244, Associate AIA - $105.

Citizen Architects

The national AIA has asked for our help in identifying AIA Wisconsin members who also are elected or appointed members of state and local government boards or commissions. This information will be used to develop programs that support architects currently in these positions and to encourage other architects interested in these opportunities for civic engagement. If you are an appointed member of a county, city, school district or other local government board or commission, please let the AIA Wisconsin office know the name of the board or commission, who appointed you and when your term expires. Similarly, if you are an elected member of a county board, city council, school board or other elected office, please let us know the name of your position and when your term expires. Thank you for your civic leadership and help with this AIA survey. Please reply to: aiaw@aiaw.org.

Continuing Education Requirements

The Wisconsin Examining Board of Architects, Landscape Architects, Professional Engineers, Designers and Land Surveyors has approved new administrative rules [Chapter A-E 12] that establish minimum continuing education requirements for architects to renew their state license. The new continuing education rules became effective on July 1 and will first apply when you renew your next two-year Wisconsin license by August 2012. Architects will need 24 hours of continuing education, including 16 hours related to health, safety and welfare topics, every two years. The AIA is listed as an approved provider of continuing education programs; and architects can use the AIA/CES transcript to document their continuing education hours. To review the new requirements, go to: Wisconsin Continuing Education Requirements

AIA/CES Transcript & Self-Report Form

This is a good time to print your AIA/CES transcript and check that it includes all of your learning activities by visiting http://www.aia.org/education/index.htm. If you participate in a continuing education program that is not offered by an AIA/CES Registered Provider, you have the option of self reporting this learning activity.
