Design Your School Competition

You are invited to participate in the 2011 Architects in Schools “Design Your School” Design Competition for Wisconsin students in grades 9-12.

A display of the submitted projects will be featured at the 2011 AIA Wisconsin Convention on May 4 & 5 at the Monona Terrace Community & Convention Center.

This design competition is made possible by the support of the Wisconsin Architects Foundation.

The Competition

The project involves the design of an environmentally sustainable school. The type of school and its location will be determined by each student team based on the needs of their community. The project can involve the design of a new building or the renovation and recycling of an existing building anywhere in their community.

The numbers and sizes of typical classrooms, cafeteria, auditoriums, parking lots, playgrounds and support offices will be provided for elementary, middle school and high school projects to give the entrant a baseline from which to design.

Eligibility And Authorship

Projects must have been designed by student teams sponsored by a participating Wisconsin high school. Students must be enrolled in 9th-12th grade during the 2011 spring semester.

AIA Wisconsin will provide one copy (on loan) to each school of “Designing the Sustainable School,” By Alan Ford

Program description and curriculum guides/suggestions provided by Committee Chair, Josh Johnson, AIA, and Luke Siebert, 2008 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation High School Teacher of the Year and technology education teacher at Oostburg High School.

Awards will be presented to first, second and third place teams. The jury is comprised of distinguished Wisconsin architects specializing in sustainable and school design.

Entry Submissions Overview

All materials shall be submitted electronically on a CD-ROM. Each submission shall contain a one-page project statement, up to six pages illustrating—through sketches, photos, computer generated output or a combination of these— Site Plans, Floor Plan(s), Elevations, Building Sections and Building Diagrams/Sketches and Sustainable Features.

Entries will not be returned.

Deadlines, Details And Entry Forms

Letters of interest from schools wishing to participate should be submitted no later than December 8, 2010. There is no fee for teams to participate. Participation will be limited to 15 teams for the 2011 Competition. All completed submissions must be received at the AIA Wisconsin office by no later than 5:00 p.m., April 21, 2011.
